Admission Procedure

Candidates submit to the Department’s Secretariat an application for admission to the International Doctoral Program, the following.

Content of nomination file

The required supporting documents submitted in paper and electronically (email: int_phd@uth.gr  and cc:  phdpe_adm@uth.gr) by each candidate are as follows:

  1. Application (Appendix 1) which states:
  • The proposed title of the Doctoral Dissertation in English.
  • The proposed faculty member who will supervise the Doctoral Dissertation.
  • If they wish to do a Doctoral Dissertation with co-supervision, they can choose between the International Institutions that cooperate with the School of Physical Education, Sport Science and Dietetics of the University of Thessaly. In this case, the admission conditions described in the relevant cooperation protocol are additionally followed. The candidate may request to be registered with the School and have his request for co-supervision accepted or not at a later time. The cooperating institution can respond if it accepts the candidate (or PhD student) for co-supervision either within the first semester from the date of the candidate’s application to the University of Thessaly, or in a later period. The latter can happen if the PhD student decides to do a trial part of doctoral studies at the European university Institution in the period after registration at the University of Thessaly.
  1. Detailed curriculum vitae.
  2. Certified copy of degree or diploma.
  3. Certified copy of master’s degree.
  4. If there is a copy of a postgraduate research thesis and/or scientific publications.
  5. Proof of very good knowledge (level C1/C1 and above) of the English language as described in Appendix 2.
  6. Two letters of recommendation which will be submitted directly by the signatory to the Department Secretariat (printed or electronically). No letter of recommendation from the proposed supervisor of the Doctoral Dissertation is submitted.
  7. A draft proposal for the Doctoral Dissertation (up to 1,500 words) in English, identifying the topic that will be investigated. The research topic should be original and it should advance knowledge in the specific knowledge area. The final proposal can be submitted during the Doctoral studies and may differ partially from the initial draft.

The draft should include the following elements:

  • Title
  • Introduction
  • Analysis of the rationale and originality of the doctoral research.
  • Proposed methodology.
  • Timetable (on an annual basis) for the main actions/objectives during the course of study.
  • Bibliography

Following acceptance as a doctoral student, in order to register the candidate should also submit to the Secretariat

  1. A Special form (Appendix 3) completed by the proposed faculty member who will supervise the Doctoral Thesis, stating his/her intention to supervise the candidate during the preparation of the research project and the Doctoral Dissertation, as well as the two proposed faculty members who will complete the Three-member Advisory Committee.
  2. Declaration stating that it is in line with Law 1599/1986, that (a) the candidate has read the guide of Doctoral Studies and has understood the obligations towards the completion of the Doctoral Studies, (b) that the caniddate has read and been informed about the rules of ethics of the University of Thessaly (Appendix 4).
